CoastExpress: Kwacha Africa troupe wins in cultural event

"Mombasa-based Kwacha Africa troupe are the winners of this year’s Kiriro cha Kifo cultural (Oath of death) festival.

The event held at Cleopatra Theatre in Malindi, saw teams from Mombasa win the first position in all the three events that included dances, plays and choral verses." Click here to read the article.

  Kwacha Afrika Troupe (KAT) is a youth based community organization which is registered with the Ministry of Culture Social Services in Mombasa, Kenya.

Current programs

Kwacha Afrika is implementing different programs in the community in collaboration with different NGOs. The programs are:

  • HIV & AIDS prevention, care and support
  • Gender equality
  • Malaria prevention
  • Child rights
  • Theatre For Development and income generation activties
  • Peer Education in schools

During a community outreach

The main donors of Kwacha Afrika’s activities are ACTION AID (Mombasa, Kenya). ACTION AID recently sponsored two members of Kwacha Afrika to attend the National Organization of Peer Educators (NOPE) conference in Nairobi, Kenya.

Kwacha Afrika is also involved in the USAID funded IMPACT project in the youth component. Kwacha Afrika has just started a new project titled “KEEPING IT REAL” which is funded by ACTION AID targeting the youth. The organization has started youth networking programs in Kisauni, which is in the north coastal region of Kenya. They have acquired an office premise, which includes a conference room. The conference room has a television and video where youth attend educative video sessions.

Community outreach

Saturdays are days for peer education for the Kisauni youth. Youth come together and have discussions on HIV & AIDS and other social issues affecting them and how to deal with them.

Kwacha Afrika is a member of Kenya AIDS National Consortium (KANCO)

Kwacha Afrika has also started some income generating activities on a small scale.
